The purpose of this task:

Leadership is a long journey, and it's sustained by more than just discipline. It's fueled by what you truly love and what truly drives you. Many people find it difficult to know what really motivates them, often focusing on external rewards like money, feelings of satisfaction from helping, or seeking approval from others. This task is about connecting to your two internal fuel sources:

  • Joy: This is the genuine sense of interest, fulfillment, and ease you experience when engaging in an activity, even if it's challenging. It’s that feeling of flow when time seems to disappear and energy feels naturally sustained. For leaders, this joy (flow) is a source of magnetism, and their joy becomes contagious.
  • Motivation: This is the inner engine that keeps you moving forward or trying to do so. While external rewards may push you temporarily, true motivation sustains you and fuels your consistency, especially when the journey gets tough. Knowing what fuels you helps you navigate challenges with clarity and resilience.

The process for completing this task:

It’s time to refuel. This process is designed to help you discover the two inner fuel sources that will sustain you as a leader.

Part 1: Your Leadership Joy

  • Step 1: Understand Joy. Take a moment to reflect on the difference between enjoyment and simply being good at something. Remember, enjoyment is the sunshine that lights your way. It brings clarity, warmth, and momentum to your journey.
  • Step 2: Find Your Flow State. Think about five different times when you felt truly in flow as a leader.
    • Scenario: You’re leading a workshop or facilitating a meeting. You’ve prepared, you’re present, and suddenly, you're in the zone. The ideas flow. The energy is high. You don’t even check the time. That’s enjoyment in action!
  • Step 3: Reflect and Answer. For each of those moments you identified, reflect and write down your answers to the following questions:
    • What were you doing?
    • What about that task or moment that made it enjoyable?

Part 2: Your Leadership Motivation

  • Step 1: Understand Motivation. Motivation is the inner engine that keeps you moving forward. External rewards (like money or titles) may push you temporarily, but true motivation sustains you.
  • Step 2: Identify Your Drivers. The key to finding your true motivation is to identify your Pleasure & Pain Principle. You are often driven either by the desire for pleasure (what you want to gain) or the avoidance of pain (what you want to escape).
    • Pain is what you are afraid of becoming. It could be something you experienced in the past, like a burnout that took a long time to recover from (you disconnect from work at 6 pm each day), or something you witness in a person close to you, such as a parent's knee pain (you exercise every morning). You are motivated to act in order to avoid this pain.
    • Pleasure is what gives you pleasant feelings. It could be your future self-vision or the image of your body after exercise. This vision motivates you to take action every day to reach it.
  • Step 3: Reflect and Answer. To find your true drivers, create a list of the following:
    • Pains: List five pains that you are actively avoiding as a leader.
    • Pleasures: List five things you want to become or gain as a leader.
