Introduction for Today's Task

Identity Crossing

Welcome back! Today you will prepare for understanding your true self as a leader, right here, right now. We arrive at Identity Crossing; the pivotal point where you take a clear, honest, and compassionate look at who you are as a leader in this very moment. Before you can chart where you are heading, you must first define where you stand.

Many might think leadership is reserved for boardrooms or official titles, for managing teams at work. But at BVisionRY, we know the truth: Leadership is a role you play in life and  a way of being. It's how you navigate your daily life, the decisions you make when life gets tough, how you inspire your children, support your parents, manage your morning routine, or motivate yourself through a personal challenge. You are already a leader in countless unseen ways.

Today’s task is a personal inventory. You are not looking here for external feedback or what others expect from you. It’s about putting your ego aside and reflecting, without judgment, on your current leadership reality. Your answers will reveal and shape your unique leadership identity.

The purpose of this task:

Let us agree first that leadership isn't something you’re born into; it’s something you build intentionally, day by day. To build effectively, you need a precise blueprint of your starting point. This station is your candid self-assessment, your internal GPS reading, before you set your destination.

Successfully navigating Identity Crossing means:

  • Establishing Your Baseline: Gaining clarity on your current leadership talents and areas for growth, beyond any formal title.
  • Cultivating Self-Awareness: Developing a deeper understanding of your inherent talents and persistent challenges in all life roles.
  • Grounding Your Growth: Providing the essential self-knowledge needed to continue with forging your own personalized Leadership Development Plan.
  • Empowering Authentic Action: Knowing who you truly are as a leader right now is the first and courageous step toward becoming the leader you aspire to be.

This task is about honest self-discovery and reflection.

The process for completing this task:

It’s time to define your current leadership reality.

Suggested Intel Gathering Process (Revised for Clarity):

1.Identify Your Leadership Talents (The Guiding Stars Within):

    • Reflect deeply on your daily life, work, personal roles (as a parent, child, co-worker, friend, community member), and even tough situations you've overcome.
    • Pinpoint where you excel in demonstrating leadership qualities or behaviors.
    • Think about: How do you organize your day? Motivate yourself? Support others? Resolve conflicts? Lead projects (even if informal)?

2. Provide a Specific Example of Talent (How/Where I Demonstrate This):

    • Provide a concrete example from any aspect of your life that clearly illustrates this strength and the enabling skills you listed in action.
    • Example: "I consistently manage my morning routine to fit in exercise and meditation before work. This is enabled by my discipline to wake up early and my prioritization of self-care, setting a calm tone for my day."
    • Example: "I effectively mediate family disagreements. My active listening helps me understand all perspectives, and my empathy allows me to connect with everyone's feelings, leading to balanced solutions."

3. Uncover the Underlying Skills & Competencies for Strengths (The Enabling Tools):

  • Now, for each leadership strength and example you identified above, delve deeper: What specific, underlying skills or competencies do you possess that enable you to effectively demonstrate this talent?
  • Example: If your strength is "Effective Personal Time Management," your enabling skills might be "Discipline," "Prioritization," and "Proactive Planning."
  • Example: If your strength is "Resolving family disagreements," your enabling skills might be "Active Listening," "Empathy," and "Calm."
  • AI Help for Naming Skills and Competencies: If you're unsure of what to call a skill or a competency, you can use an AI tool like ChatGPT or Gemini to help you name them. Use a prompt like this:

"I'm really good at [describe your talent here, for example: 'helping my team resolve conflicts']. What are the names of the leadership skills and competencies that describe what I'm good at? Please give me specific names and a short explanation for each."

4. Pinpoint Your Leadership Challenges / Areas for Growth (The Uncharted Territory):

  • With the same honesty, identify areas where you find leadership difficult, where you struggle, or where you'd like to improve. These are not weaknesses, but opportunities for powerful development.
  • Think about: What makes you procrastinate? Where do you lose motivation? Where do you avoid conflict? When do you feel overwhelmed? Do you struggle with saying 'no' to extra tasks, even in personal life?

5. Provide a Specific Example of Challenge (How/Where This Shows Up):

  • Provide a concrete example from any aspect of your life that clearly illustrates this challenge.
  • Example: "I often take on too many personal commitments, leading to burnout because I don't want to disappoint others, even personally."

6. Uncover the Underlying Skills & Competencies for Challenges (The Missing Tools):

  • For each leadership challenge and example you identified above, reflect: What specific skills or competencies are currently underdeveloped or missing that, if learned, would help you overcome this challenge?
  • Example: If your challenge is "taking on too many personal commitments," the underdeveloped skills might be "Boundary Setting," "Assertive Communication," or "Delegation."
  • Example: If your challenge is "losing motivation when life gets tough," the underdeveloped skills might be "Resilience," "Self-Compassion," or "Self-Reflection."
  • AI Help for Uncovering Skills and Competencies: If you're unsure of what to call a skill or a competency, you can use an AI tool like ChatGPT or Gemini to help you name them. Use a prompt like this:

"I'm working on a personal leadership assessment. My current challenge is that I [describe your challenge here, for example: 'often take on too many commitments and feel burnt out']. What are the missing skills and competencies I need to work on to overcome this?"
